Where?

Dunoon has a brilliant selection of charity shops that contribute to the development of a more circular economy at a local level. However, a trip to Bogleha Recycling centre highlights the many missed opportunities for more items to be diverted from landfill and reused locally. There are some fantastic examples across Scotland of reuse centres co-located at amenity sites as a result of partnerships between local authorities and the third sector. These operations create green jobs and training opportunities alongside the provision of affordable goods for their community. The current amenities site at Bogleha’ does not have space to allow for expansion.

 Local Place Plan

  • Argyll and Bute Council to work with local stakeholders in the community reuse sector to identify how the Hamilton Street and Victoria Street council depots and Bogleha Recycling Centre can be master planned to accommodate a community reuse facility. This facility should provide space to store, repair and retail goods to complement the work of Dunoon Community Shed.
  • Consideration should be given to how a composting operation could be accommodated on the site or in the wider local area to meet carbon reduction commitments and provide people with an accessible and affordable source of compost for food and plant growing.

Community Action Plan

  • Strengthen the work and impact of the local community reuse and recycling sector by facilitating a collaborative approach to developing local awareness of the sector.
  • Access funding to develop local events, such as Second Hand September, and to invest in training opportunities for young people to develop the reuse and repair skills in the community.
